It seems like there is no scope for a new device. If personal computer was the invention of the century, iPhone went revolutionary indeed. But how about Google glass and Apple watch. Yeah, it is always good to have a device, which defines every aspect of your life. . Then the real question is that, will people find time to interact with these devices?  Probably not, I guess.  They don’t want a digital belt or a digital shoe, in the sense, not a new device, but a way to connect their digital things and make those an integral part of life.

In a fast company’s interview with Matias Duarte, VP Design at Google. He shared an experience he had. It was like, when he prepared for a vacation at Hawaii, he had every device to make his life easier, he thought. He had a phone; he had a tablet, a laptop, even a Google Glass. But he says that it went terrible! It was way worse than when he all had was a phone. The reason why was because crossing the boundaries between those screens was so painful. People find every product interesting in papers, to be precise in words. The real challenge lies, whether this is the one that they really wanted. Interestingly even, they don’t know what they want. As Steve Jobs said, People don’t know what they want unless you show them something.

So in my opinion, research should be done not to invent a new device out of the existing one or by elongating or widening the screen. Rather connect every devices or things around the user. As per Prof Roel Vertergaal, there should be a computational matter which we can call as a design element or a programmable matter that takes away the concept of crossing boundaries. Unlike the flat displays of mobile phones, tablets or desktop computers, this interactive form will be wrapped around everyday objects. The morning newspaper, cards, walls, lights, on trees or even kitchen plates would maintain their original identity, yet could be augmented with an interactive high-resolution display skin. This will merge the disciplines of interaction design and industrial design in the future. Gradually, this may take away the concept of a display device.

Then we can paste a display skin to a tree, it may show the details of the tree, the weather and so on. The light that you see may not have a bulb; rather a film will be pasted on a surface, where you can control the intensity of light and all.
